I have all sorts of ideas about how to e-publish, and this adds fodder to the fire, or wood to the fire, or whatever it is you add to fires to make them go.

Accelerants, perhaps.

I have 15+ short stories and I waste more ideas blogging every day when I should be writing.

I keep thinking that with e-publishing, there's a place for ~novellas~ and serialized pulp fictions (like 3 novellas tied together, or an endless series of 15-20kw stories published monthly).

I'll keep ponderizing, and I'll keep an eye on your blog and your writings.

- EricEric W. Thanks for stopping by the blog. About s...Hi Eric,

Thanks for stopping by the blog. About short stories, on Kindle and Smashwords the smallest amount you can charge without going free is .99. So, the idea (at least what I've heard other authors do) is to put your pieces out there for .99 but offer some of them for free. (I haven't done this yet cause I'm working on my third and that one will be free.)

Anyhow, after you have six or so shorts, then you compile them into a collection which typically sells for 1.99 to 2.99 (.30 to .50 a short).

I'm pretty new at this,(like a month) but I have sold some at the .99 price--like 5. I have had a lot of downloads with coupons (which makes the story free.)

Three reasons I'm writing shorts right now are:
1. Trying to build up my epublishing portfolio without writing full on books.

2. I'm querying traditional publishers for a book and want to keep writing while I query but I don't want to start a new novel while I'm revising the other one.

3. Build up name recognition.
If I happen to sell a few shorts at the same time, all the better.

From everything I've read, with epublishing they say put your stuff out as soon as it's done. No reason to wait like traditional publishers. Then, when you've got enough, put them together in a collection and give a better deal on the price.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11573354179519141077noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1414162241324739761.post-2021851734820729522011-02-24T09:34:32.417-08:002011-02-24T09:34:32.417-08:00So you're selling your shorts one at a time? I...So you're selling your shorts one at a time? I haven't dived too deep into the e-book realm (smashwords and kindle and such), but was thinking this might not be a bad schtick. I was pricing closer to $0.20, though, not $0.99, per short. The equation was 15 shorts at $0.20 = $3.00 for a whole book, which is about the going rate for an e-book of 15 shorts.

Like buying songs online for $0.50 each, or a $15 album. The price per song is roughly the same either way.

I'd be interested to see how successful you are with this approach and how you set your pricing, or pointed to a post if you already discussed it.

- EricEric W.
